The Hilda M. Barg Homeless Prevention Center

Just two years ago, Mary worked overseas for a program that provided housing for low-income families. When she relocated to Virginia for a new job, she found herself struggling to provide food, housing and other necessities for her three children. Rather than live on the streets, she took the advice of a co-worker and moved her family to the Hilda M. Barg Homeless Prevention Center in Woodbridge, Virginia.

“Here,” Mary says, “I came into contact with people who fed us and gave us a place to stay – a place to start life over…VOA Chesapeake made life easier for me.”

For more than 17 years, this 30-bed, short-term shelter has helped homeless adults develop individual plans that promote self-sufficient living. Shelter residents, homeless individuals and other community members in need can take advantage of Volunteers of America Chesapeake’s on-site programs, including mental health evaluation and counseling, drug and alcohol abuse prevention services, children's services, budget training, adult education and employment services.

At Hilda M. Barg Homeless Prevention Center, younger residents can escape from the hardship of homelessness with a good meal, a warm bath, a cozy bed and a magical trip to the center’s fully stocked toy room. And, families can stay awhile to focus on the important things in life.
