Shelter Plus Care
At Shelter Plus Care in Lanham, Maryland, it doesn’t matter how someone came into homelessness. What matters most is that clients are willing to embrace the rules of the program and work toward improving their quality of life.
Funded by HUD, Shelter Plus Care provides permanent housing, rental assistance and psychiatric rehabilitative services to mentally ill homeless adults and their families. Of the 26 clients who live in one of SPC’s apartments or townhouses, three people have participated in the program since 1997, nineteen have been residents for more than two years, and two have recently graduated.
Also serving outside clients in Baltimore, Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties in a community Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program, Shelter Plus Care helps adults with mental illness reduce symptoms of their psychiatric disabilities and maximize their ability to function successfully in the community.
That’s the ultimate achievement for a program where staff members visit with each resident six times a month, create customized support services to match residents’ levels of functioning, and strive to provide excellent services to ensure the program’s continued success.
Volunteers can help by picking up, transporting, and placing furniture when donated.
