Prince George's Mental Health Services
When Prince George’s County Department of Family Services Mental Health and Disabilities Administration needs help serving the area’s most difficult mentally ill residents, it turns to Volunteers of America Chesapeake’s Prince George’s Mental Health Services.
As a community psychiatric and residential rehabilitation program for adults with mental illness, Prince George’s Mental Health Services assists 67 people in 16 group homes across the county. More than 100 full and part-time employees at Prince George’s Mental Health Services assist residents with comprehensive support services and system advocacy.
Without the program and its intense support services, many residents would remain hospitalized. Instead, these men and women are able to live in the most nonrestrictive environment possible – a loving group home – where they participate in daily housekeeping tasks, attend continuing education classes and enjoy group activities. Currently, five of the program’s residents work in the community on a part-time basis. One person attends Prince George’s Community College. And, often the Division of Rehabilitation Services or Career Designs will provide job training as needed.
In addition, this program has property management duties, including oversight of all facilities and financials, for 13 HUD sites in Prince George’s County and Baltimore. Through Maryland’s Community Enhancement Initiative, the program has expanded to serve more people who suffer from chronic and severe mental illness, and increased the operating budget to enhance much-needed specialized services.
