Harford Senior Center

Every Wednesday afternoon, excitement rises at Harford Senior Center as one hundred or more participants often gather in the cozy activities room for several rounds of BINGO. “I look forward to this all week!” says one attendee readily armed with ink daubers.

But, BINGO isn’t the only game in town at the Center. Located on a busy thoroughfare in Baltimore City, the facility provides a variety of activities, events and outings in a comfortable atmosphere where local seniors can remain independent and active. On any weekday, many “regulars” – more than 300 active participants – are scattered around the site in the library, computer center, art studio and game room.

In 1998, the Baltimore City Commission on Aging and Retirement Education (CARE) selected Volunteers of America Chesapeake to operate the Harford Senior Center – which is also a congregate meal site for Eating Together in Baltimore, a city funded program that enables seniors to enjoy a nutritious lunch in a companionable environment for only $1.50 per meal.

For Baltimore’s seniors, Harford Senior Center is more than just a gathering place. It’s a community of active members that promotes physical, emotional and social wellness – enhancing the quality of life for all those involved.

Managed by only three employees, the Center relies on volunteers to help coordinate activities, events, health screenings and the Center’s well-known food pantry.
